A key TCM herb for clearing heat-toxins — used for sore throat, fever, and skin infections. Partner herb with honeysuckle in the famous Yin Qiao San formula for early-stage colds.
Isatis Root (Ban Lan Gen) 板蓝根
China's go-to herb for viral infections — sold in every pharmacy as granules. Used for sore throat, fever, and epidemic prevention. Massively popular during flu seasons and COVID.
Raw Licorice (Sheng Gan Cao) 生甘草
Unprocessed licorice — in TCM clears heat and detoxifies, different from honey-fried licorice which tonifies the spleen. Used for sore throat, cough, and poisoning.
Field Mint (Bo He) 薄荷
The Chinese medicinal mint — slightly different from Western peppermint. Used to disperse wind-heat, clear the head and eyes, and soothe the throat. Milder than peppermint oil.
Fritillaria (Chuan Bei Mu) 川贝母
Premier TCM herb for cough — clears heat, resolves phlegm, and moistens the lungs. The Sichuan variety is milder (for dry cough). Extremely expensive due to wild-harvesting challenges.
Chaga Mushroom 桦褐孔菌
A birch tree fungus with extremely high antioxidant content (ORAC score). Used in Russian and Chinese folk medicine for immune support and overall vitality.
Black Elderberry Extract 接骨木提取物
Standardized elderberry extract (Sambucol) with the strongest clinical trial data for flu duration reduction. Prevents viral entry into cells. The extract form most studied.
Siler Root (Fang Feng) 防风
Literally 'guard against wind' — used to expel wind from the body in all its TCM manifestations: colds, joint pain, skin rashes, and spasms. A gentle wind-releasing herb.
Red Dates (Hong Zao) 红枣
The dried red variety of jujube, used daily in Chinese cooking and medicine. Nourishes blood, calms the spirit, and harmonizes other herbs in formulas.
